Times Are Changing

My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard

To tell the truth, I don’t really like that song. When I fully understood what the lyrics meant, I was wondering what kind of music was making it into our world. But I digress. While I don’t agree with some of the lyrics I’ve pulled out the “My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard” line more than once. It actually made me think, does my milkshake bring all the boys to the yard?

As we are all aware that I’ve been trying to loose weight and tone up. At first one of the reasons was to bring all the boys to the yard. Then I started thinking, is this why I’m loosing weight? Is this why I think I’m single? I’ve always been told that I am a pretty girl and that boys were attracted to my personality. I haven’t really even been told that I was hot. In the gym the other day I thought to myself, “What’s so wrong with that?”

Why should I put so much weight on my weight. I’ve never been told by a boyfriend that I needed to loose weight. I actually had a boyfriend who told me he would break up with me if I called myself a baby hippo one more time. Boys who said they thought curves were sexy and that double size zero was not attractive. But is this what our society has come to? Making women feel that they aren’t beautiful because we can’t fit into 97% of Abercrombie wear?

I know most of you reading this are probably saying “Duh Amy! Get out from under your rock!” While I’m well aware of this issue, I am just now accepting it. Why am I so afraid to be the pretty girl? Why do I hate that boys get to know me as a person first? I am still working out because I need to be healthy and I need to feel better. I just need to do it for me.

I think that’s been the point all along. That’s been what I’ve had to figure out to make this healthy lifestyle really work. I figured out the next number to the combination. I need to do this for myself. Not for the next boy in the bar, not for the next boyfriend and not for the boys of the past. Who do you get healthy for? Who would you get healthy for?

I just want you to know that I did read this the same day you wrote it. You were so ‘right on’ that I really had nothing to add to it other than I am proud that you have realized you have to do it for you.
